Galway Itineraries
Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Galway, planned step by step.
Whether you have a few hours off the DART or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Galway. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.
The Latin Quarter Half-Day
A half-day that takes you down the medieval spine of the city, from a coffee in Eyre Square to a plate of seafood by the Spanish Arch. It is mostly flat, mostly cobbled and entirely walkable, with enough history packed into a short stretch to keep you stopping. Good for a first afternoon or a wet one, since the museum and the lanes give you cover. Take it slow and let the buskers set the pace.

Coffee at McCambridge's
Start with a coffee and a bite at McCambridge's on Shop Street, a Galway institution and a good place to gather yourself before the walk.

Galway City Museum and the Spanish Arch
Carry on to the Spanish Arch and the free City Museum beside it, for the maritime and social history that ties the whole walk together, then stand by the water where the Corrib meets the bay.

Lunch at McDonagh's
Finish with lunch at McDonagh's on Quay Street, the seafood house that has fed Galway for generations. Fish and chips or a plate of the day, just back up the lane from the arch.

A Full Day in the City of the Tribes
A full day that works through the medieval city in the morning, gets you out on the water or across to the Claddagh in the afternoon, and finishes with dinner and a trad session. It covers the heritage, the market and the river without ever feeling rushed, and it ends the way a Galway day should, with music. Most of it is on foot through the centre, so wear something you can walk cobbles in. Build in time to just sit and watch the streets go by.
- 109:30·45 minutes
St Nicholas' Church
Begin at St Nicholas' Collegiate Church on Lombard Street, the largest medieval parish church in Ireland still in use, founded in 1320 and tied to the Columbus legend.
