Hall of the Red Earl
Hall of the Red Earl
About
Behind the Custom House on Druid Lane sits the oldest excavated building in medieval Galway, a hall built in the late 13th century by Richard de Burgo, the Red Earl. It was lost for centuries and only rediscovered in 1997, when more than 11,000 artefacts came up out of the ground with it. The remains now sit under glass with a viewing gangway running over them, managed by the Galway Civic Trust. It is free, small and easy to miss, which is half its charm.
