If a Galwegian sends a visitor anywhere for fish, it is here. McDonagh's has held its spot on Quay Street since 1902, four generations of the same family, and it splits into two halves: a casual walk-in Fish & Chips bar at the front and a proper sit-down seafood restaurant behind it. The restaurant takes bookings by phone, but most people just queue for the battered haddock and the chowder and never regret it. It is the single most iconic seafood name in the city, busy with locals and visitors in roughly equal measure.
