Cardiff in Half a Day
The castle-quarter loop: everything inside a ten-minute walking radius of Cardiff Castle, which is most of what makes the city centre special. Works in any weather, since the market and arcades are glass-roofed and the castle's best rooms are indoors. Ideal if you are in town on a morning train and out on an evening one.

Coffee in Cardiff Market

Walk the arcades

Cardiff Castle
Two hours does it justice: the Norman keep for the view, the Burges apartments for the gilded madness, the wartime shelters in the walls on the way out.

Bute Park or the National Museum
Fair weather: walk into Bute Park behind the castle and follow the Taff. Foul weather: ten minutes to the National Museum's free Impressionist rooms.

Castle to Bay: the Full Cardiff Day
Both poles of the city in one day: the castle quarter in the morning, then down the Taff to Cardiff Bay by water bus for the Millennium Centre, the Senedd and the barrage, and back for a proper dinner. The water-bus leg is the trick most day-trippers miss.

Market and arcades

Water bus from Bute Park to the Bay
Board the Princess Katharine at the park landing near the castle (departures at half past the hour; pay on board) and ride the Taff down past the stadium.

Lunch at Mermaid Quay, then the waterfront set pieces
Eat by the water, then do the loop: Millennium Centre foyer, the Pierhead, the Senedd, Roald Dahl Plass and the Ianto shrine.

Walk the barrage
Out along the barrage towards Penarth for the estuary views, as far as time and legs allow, then back along the waterfront.
