Bute Park
About
The green heart of Cardiff, running north from behind the castle walls along the River Taff: 130 acres of arboretum, riverside meadow and lawns that were once the Bute family's private grounds and have belonged to the city since 1947. Inside are the Victorian-brick outline of Blackfriars Friary, an arboretum with several UK champion trees, the Secret Garden and Summerhouse cafes, and the riverside path that forms the city stretch of the Taff Trail. Open 7:30am to 8:30pm daily, free, and the fastest way to feel like you have left the city without leaving it; the castle's Animal Wall is literally the park's front fence.

Tips
- →The water bus to Cardiff Bay leaves from the park's riverside landing near the castle; a good one-way trick is to walk up the park and boat back.
- →Open 7:30am to 8:30pm daily; the West Lodge coffee spot by the Castle Street gate changed hands in 2025, so do not navigate by old cafe names.
