For a morning and lunch in Aber: the castle, the prom, the bar, and the cliff railway up to Y Consti. The camera obscura opens at 11:00, so the timing works, and the summit cafe serves breakfast until one and meals until 4:15.

    Castle ruins and the standing stones

    Free, no gates, on the grass at the south end of the prom. The ruins are Grade I listed; Glyndŵr held them from 1404 for four years.

    Walk the prom past the pier and the Old College

    North along Marine Terrace: the Old College behind you, the Royal Pier, and the bandstand. Aim for the iron bar at the very end of the prom.

    Cliff railway to the top

    Rheilffordd y Graig from the lower station, no booking. Then the camera obscura, £1 for adults, open from 11:00.

    The summit cafe, open daily 10 to 5, last orders for meals 4:15. Breakfast dishes are served until 1pm.

A day up the Rheidol: steam to Devil's Bridge and back for supper

Full day, about 9 hoursBest in summer

Take the Vale of Rheidol steam train up the valley, walk the waterfalls trail at Devil's Bridge, and come back for supper on the prom. Train times depend on the day's coloured timetable, so check vor.wales first. The railway describes the round trip as two hours forty-five minutes with the stop.

    Book on vor.wales or at the booking office. The Engine Shed Museum at the station is free and worth a look first.

    Devil's Bridge Waterfalls

    Leave the station quickly, head left down the hill past the hotel to the kiosk: on the orange timetable the operator says you have about an hour. The long walk takes at least 45 minutes and has 675 steps.

    Back down the valley

    Standard class passengers can use any public train that day. In summer some timetables leave longer at the top; in that case add the tea rooms at the falls.

    From the station walk the prom to the foot of Constitution Hill, and back.
