Pontarfynach, 12 miles inland from Aberystwyth, is where the Mynach river drops into the Rheidol gorge under three bridges built one on top of the other. The privately run trail has two walks: a 45-minute circuit of the gorge with the 300ft falls, and a 10-minute Punchbowl walk that takes in the three bridges. The operator's own FAQ counts 675 steps on the long walk, says it is really challenging and not suitable for pushchairs, and adds that many people enjoy it in the rain. Tips
- →Open daily 9:30 to 17:00 with an attendant, staff closing times may be later in school and bank holidays; turnstiles outside those hours.
- →Do not start after dusk; the trail is not lit and there is no mobile signal at the bottom of the gorge.
- →Coming by Vale of Rheidol train on the orange timetable you have about an hour: head left down the hill past the hotel to the kiosk quickly.
- →American Express is not accepted.
