Adare Itineraries
Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Adare, planned step by step.
Whether you have a few hours or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Adare. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.
Half a Day in Adare: the Village and the Ruins
If Adare is a stop on the road between Limerick and Kerry, a half day is enough to see the best of it without over-promising. Walk the thatched street, take in the three medieval churches, get your bearings at the Heritage Centre, and eat in the village. Compact and walkable, and honest about the fact that the thatched stretch is short.

Walk the thatched Main Street
Start on Main Street with the row of 1820s-30s estate thatched cottages, the village's postcard image. Walk it slowly and look at the craft shops and cafes in the cottages, but set your expectations: the thatched stretch is short and the street is busy with traffic, so it is prettier early in the day.

The medieval churches
Walk the short loop of Adare's three medieval religious houses: Holy Trinity Abbey on Main Street, now the Catholic parish church, and the Augustinian Priory (the Black Abbey), now the Church of Ireland church, both visitable. The Franciscan Friary sits on the Adare Manor golf grounds, so check access at the Heritage Centre rather than assuming you can reach it.

Adare Heritage Centre
Get the full story at the Heritage Centre, with its free exhibition on the village's estate and monastic history, a cafe and craft shops. This is also where you confirm Desmond Castle tour times if you are visiting in summer.

Lunch in the village
Eat before you move on. The Blue Door does Irish classics in a thatched cottage with a beer garden, or Cafe Logr for a lighter lunch and coffee. Both keep you in the heart of the village.

A Full Day in Adare: Village, Castle and Countryside
A full day gives Adare more than the drive-through it usually gets: the thatched village and its ruins in the morning, the Desmond Castle tour or the countryside in the afternoon, and a proper dinner in the evening. Best in summer, when Desmond Castle tours run and the light is long. Built to slow the visit down and take in the setting as well as the street.

The village and the ruins
Start with the thatched Main Street and the medieval churches, then orient yourself at the Heritage Centre. Confirm the day's Desmond Castle shuttle time while you are there, as it runs daily only from June to end September.

Desmond Castle tour
In summer, take the guided tour of the 13th-century Desmond Castle by the River Maigue, reached by shuttle from the Heritage Centre. It is the most substantial history you can go inside in Adare. Outside the June to September window, swap this for the River Maigue riverside walk instead.

Lunch, then the countryside
Eat in the village, then head out to Curraghchase Forest Park, about 10 km west, for woodland and lakeside trails away from the crowds. If you would rather stay near the village, walk the River Maigue riverside path instead. Either gets you into the green setting beyond the street.

Dinner in the village or at the resort
Finish with dinner. For a special meal, 1826 Adare does fine dining in a thatched cottage, or, if you have booked well ahead, the one-Michelin-star Oak Room at Adare Manor. For something easier, one of the village pubs. Book ahead whichever you choose.
