Ireland's thatched estate village
Adare sits in County Limerick, about 16 km south-west of Limerick city on the N21 road to Kerry, in the newly grouped Mid-West region. Its fame rests on a short, concentrated row of thatched cottages, built in the 1820s and 1830s by the Earls of Dunraven as part of a planned estate model village, and several of those cottages now hold craft shops, cafes and restaurants. Around them the village holds an unusual concentration of medieval remains for its size: Holy Trinity Abbey, the Augustinian Priory and the Franciscan Friary, with Desmond Castle above the River Maigue.
The other half of the story is Adare Manor, the five-star resort in a neo-Gothic house on the edge of the village, whose championship golf course will host the 2027 Ryder Cup. That event, and the N21 bypass being built ahead of it, are reshaping the village in real time. Adare is genuinely worth a stop, but it is small and busy, and it is honest to say the thatched row will not fill a whole day on its own. Walk the estate street and the medieval ruins, get the story at the Heritage Centre, and time your visit for the quieter hours.

Adare is inland in County Limerick, so the weather is mild and damp rather than storm-battered, but rain is common and can arrive at any time of year. Pack a waterproof and warm layers, plan the thatched street and the ruins for a dry spell, and keep the Heritage Centre or a pub in mind as a wet-weather fallback.
