York Itineraries

Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in York, planned step by step.

Whether you have a few hours or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through York. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.

York in Half a Day

half-dayYear-round

The essential walled-city loop for anyone arriving by train with only a morning or afternoon: the best stretch of the walls, the Minster, the Shambles before or after the crowds, and a proper York finish in either a tea room or a medieval pub. Everything is on foot and nothing is more than fifteen minutes from anything else.

Walk the walls from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar

Climb the stairs at Bootham Bar, ten minutes' walk from the station, and take the most photographed stretch of the walls behind the Minster while it is still quiet.

    York Minster

Finish at Bettys or the Trembling Madness

Choose your York: the queue and a Fat Rascal at Bettys on St Helen's Square, or a candlelit medieval hall and a proper beer at the House of the Trembling Madness on Stonegate.

    View Bettys Café Tea Rooms

A Full Day in York

full-dayYear-round

A full day that gets the big three, walls, Minster and Shambles, done before the crowds, spends the afternoon on the river and in the castle quarter, and ends with an evening ghost walk and a serious dinner. Swap the cruise for the National Railway Museum in wet weather; it is free and ten minutes behind the station.
