The famous one. Bettys has served tea and cakes on St Helen's Square since 1936, part of the family firm founded in Yorkshire in 1919 by Swiss confectioner Frederick Belmont, and the queue out of the door is part of the ritual. The menu mixes Swiss and Yorkshire traditions, rösti next to Yorkshire rarebit, and the Fat Rascal fruit scone is the signature bake. Most seating is walk-in via the queue, which moves faster than it looks; the Lady Betty afternoon tea in the Belmont Suite is bookable ahead, Thursday to Sunday. There is a second, quieter branch at Stonegate.
