Accessibility
Town
The centre inside the walls is flat and compact, and the daytime footstreet zone makes most of it traffic-free. Surfaces are the honest limitation: cobbles and setts on the Shambles, Stonegate and the snickelways are uneven, and the city walls walk itself is reached by steep historic stairs with no step-free access on most stretches.
The Minster, the National Railway Museum, the Castle Museum and Jorvik all publish detailed access information and are substantially step-free; the walls and some medieval pub interiors are not. The riverside paths flood in winter, which closes some level walking routes. For venue-level access, contact each place directly.

Contactless card and phone payment is accepted almost everywhere in York, including at Shambles Market stalls, so little cash is needed. Specific branch locations were not itemised in this research pass; confirm on the ground.

North Yorkshire Police, Fulford Road Police Station, Fulford Road, York, YO10 4BY. Front counter opening hours have been reduced in recent years, so call 101 for non-emergencies rather than relying on a staffed desk, and 999 or 112 in an emergency.
York Hospital, Wigginton Road, York, YO31 8HE, run by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Its Emergency Department (A&E) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is about a mile due north of the Minster, a 20 to 25 minute walk or a short taxi ride, just outside the city walls beyond Bootham Bar.

Visitors needing a GP appointment should call 111 rather than a local surgery, since York practices generally cannot register short-stay visitors quickly. NHS prescriptions in England carry a per-item charge, unlike Scotland and Wales where they are free.
Luggage Storage
Ask accommodation about holding bags before check-in and after check-out. Independent left-luggage services operate near the railway station but were not individually verified in this research pass; check current options before relying on one.

The strongly recommended way to drive to York. Six sites ring the outer road network: Askham Bar, Monks Cross, Rawcliffe Bar, Grimston Bar, Poppleton Bar and York Designer Outlet, confirmed via City of York Council (2026-07-24). Buses run frequently into the centre. City-centre parking is scarce, expensive, and the medieval street plan was not designed for cars.

Council pay-and-display car parks including Marygate and Castle serve the centre, but fill early on Saturdays, in school holidays, during race meetings and throughout the St Nicholas Fair. Much of the core is a pedestrianised footstreet zone during the day.

Independent NHS pharmacy just inside Monk Bar and the latest-opening pharmacy inside the city walls, open until 21:00 Monday to Saturday. It closes for half an hour every afternoon between 14:30 and 15:00, so do not arrive at 14:45. Closed on the Summer bank holiday.

The walled centre is dominated by independents and food stalls rather than supermarkets; mainstream supermarkets sit just outside the walls. Shambles Market and the food court cover most self-catering needs in the core.

Cafes, pubs, museums and hotels
Free customer WiFi is standard in York's cafes, pubs and hotels, and mobile coverage in the city centre is good. The narrow-walled snickelways can briefly drop signal, which is more charming than inconvenient.
SIM Cards
UK and EU visitors can usually use their existing mobile plan, with EU roaming rules varying by provider since Brexit, so check before travelling. Visitors from further afield can buy a prepaid SIM or eSIM; the main mobile networks all have shops in the city centre around Coney Street and Parliament Street.
