Fort William Right Now

The live weather feed for Fort William is not loading. Before any hill day, read the Met Office mountain forecast for Ben Nevis and the MWIS West Highlands forecast, and in winter the SAIS Lochaber avalanche report, because the weather on the High Street tells you very little about the weather on the Ben.

The garrison town at the foot of the Ben

Fort William sits on the eastern shore of Loch Linnhe, with Caol and Corpach strung along Loch Eil beyond it. A wooden fort went up in 1654, and the later fort took William of Orange's name.

The big days out start just beyond the town. The Mountain Track starts at the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre in Glen Nevis, the Nevis Range gondola climbs Aonach Mòr to 650 metres north of town, and the West Highland Way's 96 miles from Milngavie end in Gordon Square.
