SpringMarch - May
Snow can lie on the upper Ben well into early summer, so spring is for the glen, the canal and the town. The Scottish Six Days Trial is based in Fort William in the first week of May.
Spring is when the glen is ready and the summit often is not. Mountaineering Scotland warns that snow covers the upper part of Ben Nevis through winter and into early summer, and the route off the summit runs between steep gullies, so treat the Mountain Track as a winter mountain until the reports say otherwise. Glen Nevis is the better bet: the walk through the Nevis Gorge to Steall, which the John Muir Trust calls Scotland's second highest falls, or the locks at Neptune's Staircase in Banavie. In the first week of May the Scottish Six Days Trial starts and finishes in Fort William every day, and spectating is free, the organisers say. In 2026 the Jacobite's season began on 1 June; West Coast Railways had not published 2027 dates when this was checked in October 2026.
SummerJune - August
Peak season for the Ben, the Jacobite and the end of the West Highland Way. Book the train and dinner ahead, and park early at the visitor centre.
Summer is when most people climb the Ben, and the visitor centre car park is first come, first served at £8 a day, per High Life Highland. Start early and still pack for winter: Mountaineering Scotland says the summit can be very cold, wet, windy and covered in snow even now. In 2026 the Jacobite's morning train ran from 1 June and the afternoon one from 10 June, and West Coast Railways says on-the-day seats are cash only and never guaranteed, so book. West Highland Way walkers finish in Gordon Square all season, which fills the bars at that end of the High Street in the evening. The 2026 Ben Nevis Race was run from Claggan on Saturday 5 September.
AutumnSeptember - November
In 2026 the Jacobite's afternoon train ended on 25 September and the morning train runs until 23 October.
Autumn is when the timetables shrink. In 2026 the Jacobite's afternoon train ended on 25 September and the morning train runs until 23 October, after which the ScotRail service to Mallaig is the way to see the line. The Black Isle Bar in Gordon Square lists noon to 11pm every day on its own page; it is walk-in only. The Ben Nevis Distillery visitor centre drops to weekdays only from September, by its own published hours. Old Inverlochy Castle is fenced off for conservation work, though Historic Environment Scotland says some of the grounds are open.
WinterDecember - February
Ben Nevis is a winter mountain from late autumn: check the SAIS Lochaber avalanche report and the mountain forecast. The Fort William Mountain Festival runs 11 to 14 February 2027.
Winter is a mountaineering season here, not a walking one. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service publishes reports for Lochaber, covering Ben Nevis and the Aonach Mòr range, and Mountaineering Scotland says the route down from the summit must avoid Gardyloo Gully and Five Finger Gully, with the Red Burn a known avalanche area. If that is not your sort of day, the Nevis Range gondola still climbs to 650 metres, weather permitting, the West Highland Museum is open Monday to Saturday, and the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre says it is open all winter. The Fort William Mountain Festival brings films and talks to town from 11 to 14 February 2027.
