Aran Islands (Inis Mór) Itineraries

Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Aran Islands (Inis Mór), planned step by step.

Whether you have a few hours or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Aran Islands (Inis Mór). Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.

Half a Day on Inis Mór: Kilronan, a Bike and Dún Aonghasa

Half dayspring-to-autumn

If you only have a morning-to-afternoon crossing before the last ferry back, spend it doing the one thing Inis Mór is genuinely built for: get off the boat, get on a bike, and ride out to Dún Aonghasa. It is compact enough to do on a day trip from Rossaveal or Doolin, and it hits the island's single unmissable sight without needing to stay overnight.

Land at Kilronan and hire a bike

Step off the ferry at Cill Rónáin and head straight for the bike-hire desks at the pier. Aran Islands Bike Hire (Rothar Árann) is the long-established operator; pick a standard bike or an e-bike if you would rather save your legs for the walk up to the fort.

Cycle the coast road to Dún Aonghasa

Ride the roughly 8 km coast road west through Mainistir and Cill Mhuirbhigh, past dry-stone-walled fields with the Atlantic to your left the whole way. Traffic is almost nonexistent, so it is a relaxed ride rather than a race against cars.

    Dún Aonghasa

Leave the bikes at the visitor centre and walk the roughly 1 km path up rough, rising rock to the fort itself. Take your time at the ramparts and the cliff edge, remembering there is no barrier at the drop, then allow time to walk back down.

    Lunch at Teach Nan Phaidí

Warm up with soup, stew or soda bread by the fire at Teach Nan Phaidí, the thatched-cottage cafe a few minutes from the visitor centre, before the ride back to Kilronan for your ferry.

A Full Day on Inis Mór: the Coast Road, Both Forts and the Wormhole

Full dayspring-to-autumn

With a full day, or better an overnight stay, you can take in both of Inis Mór's dry-stone forts, the natural drama of Poll na bPéist and dinner back in Kilronan, rather than rushing the one big sight and catching the first ferry home. This is the itinerary for anyone who wants to actually get the measure of the island rather than tick off Dún Aonghasa alone.

Bike hire and the walk to Dún Dúchathair

Start close to Kilronan with the quieter of the island's two forts. Walk or cycle south-east through Cill Éinne (Killeany) to Dún Dúchathair, the Black Fort, perched on its sea-cut cliff promontory. It is rarely busy even in peak season, and a good contrast to what is coming later at Dún Aonghasa.

Ride the coast road to Dún Aonghasa

Back at Kilronan, pick up a bike and ride the coast road west to Cill Mhuirbhigh. Stop at Kilmurvy Blue Flag Beach if the weather allows a swim, then walk up to Dún Aonghasa itself for the island's headline cliff fort.

    Poll na bPéist, the Wormhole

From Kilmurvy, continue on to Gort na gCapall and walk the last stretch over open limestone pavement to Poll na bPéist, the naturally rectangular tidal pool that has hosted Red Bull's cliff-diving series. Take real care near the water's edge; there is no marked path.

    Dinner back in Kilronan

Ride back to Cill Rónáin and finish the day at Tí Joe Watty's, the island's best-known pub and seafood restaurant, for local lobster or mussels and, if you are lucky, a live music session.
