About
Renting a bike at the pier in Cill Rónáin and cycling the roughly 8 km coast road out to Dún Aonghasa is the way most visitors actually see Inis Mór, since the island carries almost no traffic of its own and the terrain is largely flat to gently rolling. Aran Islands Bike Hire (Rothar Árann), based right at the harbour, is the long-established operator, with e-bikes also available for a flatter effort on the return leg. The road threads through Mainistir and past Cill Mhuirbhigh's dry-stone-walled fields, with the option to continue on to the Seven Churches or double back via Dún Dúchathair for a longer loop.
Highlights
- ✓Almost no traffic on the island's single coast road
- ✓Dry-stone field walls the whole way out to Kilmurvy
- ✓E-bike option to flatten the effort
- ✓Can be extended into a longer loop via the Seven Churches or Dún Dúchathair
Tips
- →Book or reserve a bike at the pier on arrival in peak summer; hire desks can run out on a busy day.
- →Allow a full half day for the round trip plus time at the fort itself.
- →Bring a windproof layer; the coast road is fully exposed to the Atlantic wind.
- →Confirm current hire rates and e-bike availability with the operator.
