Accessibility

Town

Cill Rónáin is a small, mostly flat harbour village, walkable from the pier, though pavements are informal in places and the terrain is uneven limestone rather than smooth footpath once you leave the immediate harbour area.

Dun Aonghasa

The path from the Dún Aonghasa visitor centre to the fort is about 1 km of rising, rough, natural rock; the OPW describes it as requiring strong walking shoes, and there is no fence or barrier at the cliff edge itself. This site is not readily wheelchair or buggy accessible.

Most of the island's activities involve uneven limestone pavement, unfenced cliff edges, or cycling on narrow roads; contact individual operators (bike hire, trap tours) directly about accessibility needs before booking.

ATMs & Banking

Bank of Ireland ATM at the Spar (ME Powell's)

Cill Rónáin (Kilronan), Inis Mór

Bank of Ireland

The one confirmed ATM on the island, inside/at the Spar supermarket in Kilronan, which also serves as the newsagent, off-licence and a café. Carry some cash regardless, since several island businesses, especially outside Kilronan, are cash-preferred or cash-only.

Emergency Services

General Emergency

112 or 999

Coast Guard

112 or 999, ask for the Coast Guard. Inis Mór is an island community fully reliant on sea and, when weather allows, air transfer for anything serious; a 2019 emergency drone medicine delivery to the Aran Islands (reported in the Irish Times) illustrates how isolated the island can be in poor weather. In any marine or serious medical emergency, dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.

Garda Station

Cill Rónáin (Kilronan) Garda Station, Inis Mór, Co. Galway, H91 H673, +353 99 61102.

There is no Emergency Department on Inis Mór. The nearest full hospital is University Hospital Galway (UHG) on the mainland; reaching it from the island means a ferry or, for a genuine emergency, an air or lifeboat evacuation coordinated by the Coast Guard, followed by road transfer, not a short drive. Exact transfer time was not independently verified this pass; treat it as several hours in a non-critical situation and plan accordingly.

Inis Mór Health Centre

Lower Kilronan (Cill Rónáin Íochtarach), Inis Mór, Aran Islands, Co. Galway, H91 E677

099 61171

HSE primary-care health centre; GP and nursing services, not an emergency department.

Open Monday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm per the HSE listing; closed Wednesdays, weekends and public holidays. For anything outside those hours or genuinely urgent, dial 112 or 999. There is no pharmacy on the island (see notes below); medication needs are handled through this health centre or a mainland pharmacy.

The island has no 24-hour medical facility of any kind. The Inis Mór Health Centre (see medicalCentres) covers routine and urgent primary care on its limited opening days; for anything more serious, dial 112 or 999 rather than trying to reach the health centre directly.

Luggage Storage

There is no dedicated left-luggage office on the island. Most accommodation will hold bags on arrival or departure day; ask directly. Ferry operators may also offer short-term storage at the Rossaveal terminal; confirm with the operator.

Parking

Kilronan pier area and Dún Aonghasa car park

Free / pay car park at Dún Aonghasa

Rate: Confirm current Dún Aonghasa car park rate locally; OPW admission is separate

Very few visitors bring a car to Inis Mór; almost everyone arrives on foot from the ferry and hires a bike, joins a minibus or trap, or walks. There is a car park at the Dún Aonghasa visitor centre for the small number of vehicles on the island. Street parking around Kilronan pier is informal.

Supermarkets & Groceries

ME Powell Spar

Cill Rónáin (Kilronan), Inis Mór, Co. Galway

🕐Daily; confirm current hours locally

The island's main shop: supermarket, newsagent, off-licence, coffee counter and the island's confirmed ATM, all in the one Kilronan premises. This is effectively the only full grocery stop on Inis Mór, so stock up here for a self-catering stay or a picnic on the coast road.

Taxis & Rideshare

No dedicated taxi operators confirmed

No standing taxi firm was confirmed operating on Inis Mór in this research pass; getting around is dominated by bike hire, minibus tours and pony-and-trap operators booked by phone (see transport.json). If a taxi-style private transfer is needed, ask at your accommodation or the tourist information point at the pier.

Public Toilets

Cill Rónáin (Kilronan), near the pier/harbour area

Paid
🕐Daytime hours; not independently confirmed this pass

WiFi & Connectivity

Pubs, cafes and accommodation in Kilronan

Free

Most pubs, cafes and accommodation around Cill Rónáin offer free WiFi for customers and guests. Mobile coverage is reasonable around Kilronan but can be patchy out along the coast road and around Dún Aonghasa; do not rely on live maps or bookings once you are out on the island's western end.

SIM Cards

There is no phone shop on the island; buy a prepaid SIM in Galway city or Rossaveal before travelling, or before you leave home. Irish network coverage on the island itself is inconsistent away from Kilronan.
