About
A medieval ale house above a specialist beer shop at 48 Stonegate, sitting inside part of a Norman house dating to around 1180, believed to be the oldest of its kind in York. Upstairs is all original beams, candle wax and a wall of taxidermy; the bar runs 8 kegs and 4 casks alongside one of the best bottle selections in the north, and the food is hearty, locally sourced and served in Yorkshire portions. No reservations, ever: you turn up, share a table and make friends, and at busy times you may have to wait for the room to breathe.
