Fort Road is the building that most cleanly tells Margate's last twenty years. It went up as a boarding house in 1820, stood empty for twenty-two years, and reopened in 2022 as a fourteen-room hotel after a careful refurbishment. It sits just above the Old Town on the rise towards the cliff, a short walk from the beach, the lanes and Turner Contemporary, with sea views from the front. The rooms are individually designed with vintage and bespoke furniture, selected artworks and tiled ensuite bathrooms, and rates include a continental breakfast from a buffet table. There is a restaurant, currently run by the team behind Pomus, doing bistro cooking, and a ground-floor bar that doubles as an events room and hangs work by local artists including Tracey Emin, who is from Margate. Fourteen rooms means it books out, particularly on summer weekends and around the town's festival dates.
