Accessibility
Town
The seafront promenade from the station past Main Sands to the harbour is flat, wide and genuinely step-free, and it is the best accessible route in the town. The Old Town is a different proposition: the lanes off Market Place are narrow, some are cobbled, and several shops have a step at the door. The ground rises steeply from the seafront up to Cliftonville and up Grotto Hill.
Attractions
Turner Contemporary is step-free and purpose-built. The Shell Grotto is not: access involves two sets of stairs, the floor is uneven and cambered, and it is a confined underground space with limited ventilation, all stated on the Grotto's own access page. Margate Caves is also underground. Contact each venue before travelling.
Blue Badge holders can park free on the seafront promenade at Rendezvous for up to three hours; the adjacent Rendezvous car park itself offers no Blue Badge concession. Verify venue-level access directly with each business rather than relying on a directory listing.

Card and phone payment is accepted almost everywhere in Margate, including the Old Town independents and the Harbour Arm. Some of the smaller market and beach traders are cash-preferred in high season. Specific bank branch locations were not individually verified during this build; branch closures across Kent have been frequent, so check before relying on one.

999, ask for the Coastguard. RNLI Margate Lifeboat Station is on Rendezvous by the harbour and operates an all-weather and an inshore lifeboat.
Police Station
Kent Police, Margate Police Station, Odell House, Fort Hill. Call 101 for non-emergencies and 999 or 112 in an emergency. Front-counter opening for walk-in reporting varies, so check Kent Police's own station finder rather than assuming it is staffed.
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM), Ramsgate Road, Margate. This is a full district general hospital with a 24-hour A&E, roughly a mile from the seafront, so Margate does not send emergencies out of town.

Unusually for a town this size, Margate has its own A&E rather than relying on a neighbouring town. QEQM is about a mile south of the seafront and is run by East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust. For urgent but not life-threatening problems call NHS 111 first, free and 24 hours.
Margate's beaches are lifeguarded seasonally rather than year-round, and the bays east of the town, Palm Bay through to Botany Bay, cut off on a rising tide. Check the tide before walking between bays at beach level. For urgent medical advice that is not an emergency, NHS 111 is free and answers 24 hours.
Parking
Rendezvous Car Park (Turner Contemporary)
Rate: Tariff applies 24 hours a day, Monday to Sunday. Confirm the current rate on site before parking.
Owned by Kent County Council and operated by Smart Parking, with 24/7 access, motorcycle spaces and two EV charging points. Duration is calculated by ANPR camera from entry to exit rather than by ticket, so overstaying is charged automatically. Turner Contemporary's own getting-here page states there is no concession here for Blue Badge holders; Blue Badge holders can park free on the seafront promenade at Rendezvous for up to three hours instead. Five minutes' walk from the gallery entrance.
Trinity Square Car Park
Rate: Thanet District Council tariff; check thanet.gov.uk for the current rate
Thanet District Council car park on Trinity Square, the nearest paid parking to the Shell Grotto, which has no parking of its own. The Grotto's own visitor page names this as the nearest option and asks visitors using the residential streets around Grotto Hill to park considerately.

Convenience-size supermarkets sit on and around the High Street. The large out-of-town shopping is at Westwood Cross, roughly two miles south of the seafront and served by the Thanet Loop bus, not walkable from the Old Town.

The gallery is free to enter, open Tuesday to Sunday and bank holidays, and has a cafe. It is the most reliable free indoor space on the seafront to sit down in and get online.
