Getting to Margate
How to reach Margate by train, bus, taxi, car, or bicycle.
By train
Margate is on the Kent coast line and the train is by a distance the sensible way to arrive: the station is ten minutes' walk from Main Sands along the seafront, and driving into Margate in summer means competing for ANPR-metered car parks. There are two distinct routes from London and they are not equivalent. The high-speed service from London St Pancras International runs on HS1 as far as Ashford, then onto the classic line, and it is the fast one. The other route runs from London Victoria via Faversham on classic track throughout and takes considerably longer. Southeastern operates both, and there are also direct services from Canterbury and the Medway towns. On a verified weekday service in August 2026, the 17:49 from Margate reached London St Pancras International at 19:18, an hour and twenty-nine minutes, calling at Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Thanet Parkway, Canterbury West, Ashford International, Ebbsfleet International and Stratford International. Treat about an hour and a half as the working figure for the fast route and check a live timetable for your own day, because Southeastern's own web page currently gives four different journey times for this route.

Tips
- •Buy an Advance ticket for the high-speed service if your times are fixed. Walk-up fares on HS1 are noticeably higher than on the Victoria route.
- •The high-speed service continues past Margate around the Thanet loop to Ramsgate and Broadstairs, so check which direction your train is going before you board on the return.
- •Margate station has a Premier Inn immediately beside it, which is the practical answer if a late train is not running.
- •Trains both ways are genuinely busy on hot summer weekends. Reserve if you can.

By bus
Local buses in Margate are run by Stagecoach, and the one to know is the Thanet Loop, which runs frequently along the coast and links Margate with Cliftonville, Broadstairs, Ramsgate and the Westwood Cross shopping centre. It is the route that makes the coast walk east to Botany Bay a one-way walk rather than a there-and-back, because it runs roughly parallel to the coast road and you can pick it up at most points along the way. Cecil Square in the centre of Margate is the main stop for the town, served by the Loop and by routes 8, 8A, 8X, 32 and 36. National Express runs coach services to Margate for longer-distance travel without the rail fare.

Tips
- •The Thanet Loop is the single most useful route for a visitor and it runs often enough that you do not need to plan around a timetable.
- •Westwood Cross, where the large supermarkets and chain shops are, is about two miles inland and is a bus journey rather than a walk.
- •Check current fares and any day-ticket options with Stagecoach directly; fares were not verified during this build.

There is a taxi rank at Margate railway station and licensed private hire operates across Thanet. No individual firm is named here because none was independently verified during this build, and local operators and numbers change often enough that a stale phone number is worse than no phone number. Ask at your accommodation, use the station rank, or check Thanet District Council's licensed operator information. Distances within Margate are short: the station to the Old Town is about half a mile, and the harbour to Walpole Bay is a little over a mile, both walkable along a flat promenade.

Tips
- •Most of central Margate is walkable on the flat seafront, so a taxi is usually only needed for luggage, the hospital or Westwood.
- •Confirm a fare or that the meter is running before setting off.
By car
Margate is reached from London by the M2 and then the A299 Thanet Way, or from Canterbury by the A28. It is the far corner of Kent and there is no faster way in. The honest advice is not to drive if you can avoid it. Parking in central Margate is pay-and-display and ANPR-enforced, the seafront car parks fill on hot weekends, and the Old Town's lanes are not places you want to be in a car. If you do drive, the two most useful car parks are Rendezvous, next to Turner Contemporary on the seafront, and Trinity Square, which is the closest paid parking to the Shell Grotto and Cliftonville. Rendezvous charges 24 hours a day and calculates your stay by camera from entry to exit, so there is no grace in overstaying, and it offers no Blue Badge concession; Blue Badge holders can instead park free on the promenade itself for up to three hours.

Tips
- •Rendezvous is camera-enforced from entry to exit. There is no ticket to run down and no tolerance for a few extra minutes.

- •Confirm the current tariff on site or at thanet.gov.uk before parking; rates are reviewed periodically and were not fixed at the time of writing.

By bike
The Viking Coastal Trail runs along the Thanet coast and through Margate, and it is genuinely the best way to cover the ground between the town and the bays out east: level, largely traffic-free along the promenade, and continuous. Turner Contemporary provides cycle parking outside its entrance. The same tide caution applies as for walking, in that the beach-level sections between bays are not always passable. Inland the Isle of Thanet is flat, which is unusual for Kent and makes for easy riding, but the coast road can be busy in summer.

The cleanest route is the high-speed service to London St Pancras International, then Thameslink directly from the same station to Gatwick. St Pancras is the only London terminus where the transfer does not involve changing stations, which is why it beats the Victoria route for this journey despite both ending in London.

Southend sits directly across the Thames Estuary from Margate and is visible from the seafront on a clear day, but there is no passenger ferry, so the road route runs all the way round through the Dartford Crossing. Rail via London is slower still.

Turner Contemporary's own getting-here page states there is no concession here for Blue Badge holders; Blue Badge holders can park free on the seafront promenade at Rendezvous for up to three hours instead. Five minutes' walk from the gallery entrance.
Trinity Square Car Park
Thanet District Council tariff; check thanet.gov.uk for the current rate. Thanet District Council car park on Trinity Square, the nearest paid parking to the Shell Grotto, which has no parking of its own. The Grotto's own visitor page names this as the nearest option and asks visitors using the residential streets around Grotto Hill to park considerately.
