A family-run Italian restaurant and shop on Broad Street in the Old Town, cooking the food of Foglianise, a village in Benevento province about an hour inland from Naples, because that is where one half of the family is from. The distinction matters: this is Campanian home cooking rather than the generic trattoria repertoire, and a good deal of the larder is imported directly from friends and relatives there, including preserved tomatoes, olive oil, natural wine and heritage grain flour, with the fresh produce sourced around Margate. Pasta is made in house. The Guardian's Grace Dent called it possibly some of the best Italian food in modern Britain, which is the kind of quote a restaurant puts on its own homepage, and Bottega Caruso does. Next door at number 8 is Cantina Caruso, their wine bar and deli, doing natural wine by the glass, aperitivo cocktails, small plates, and pasta, sauces and ceramics to take home. Between them they also run cookery workshops, Italian film nights and wine tastings. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
