About

James Thomson's candlelit gothic dining rooms at the very top of the Royal Mile, in buildings at the Castle gates dating to 1595. Oak panelling, tapestries and candle flame make it Edinburgh's most theatrical dinner, the Sunday Times once called it an outrageously gothic temple of too-muchness, and the kitchen backs the drama with Scottish beef, game and shellfish; the set lunch (around £39.50 to £49.50) is the accessible way in. Open daily with last reservations at 10.30pm, no groups over six, and nine famously over-the-top gothic suites upstairs if dinner turns into a stay.
