Half a day in Tramore
The short version, built around the walk that most day trippers never do. It works without a car if you come in on the 360 from Waterford, and it ends back at the prom in time for chips.

Coffee on Main Street
Start in the town rather than on the seafront. Vee Cafe opens at half eight and is where breakfast happens before anything on the prom is serving.

Walk the Doneraile
Pick up the clifftop walk at the west end of the prom and follow it past the Sea Horse memorial to the old coastguard station. The bay is on your left the whole way and the Brownstown Head pillars are visible across the water on a clear day.

Stop at the Coastguard Cultural Centre
The cafe in the restored coastguard station serves lunch from noon and the clifftop gardens are free to walk into. Whatever is hanging in the gallery is usually local.

Carry on to the Guillamene
Continue down through Glenacuan and along the Cliff Road to the swimming coves. Watch the club swimmers going off the platform into deep water, and get in yourself if the sea is flat and you know what you are doing.

Back to the prom for chips
Walk back by the road into town and finish where everyone finishes. Massimo's is the chipper nearest the sand; Dooly's is up on Main Street and the argument about which is better is older than either of you.

A full day in Tramore
A day that uses the water properly. Book the surf lesson before you travel, because the public lesson runs at a fixed time and fills in summer.

Breakfast before the beach
Vee Cafe in the town centre from half eight. Eat before the lesson rather than after it, and keep it light.

The strand, before the crowd
Walk out along the sand from the prom towards the dunes while the tide is out. Check the tide time first: the Backstrand fills behind the spit and the far end is not the place to be caught.

Lunch on the prom
Brooklyn in the Pavilion units at the end of the prom does pizza and burgers with an outdoor terrace facing the sand, which is the right thing to eat before an afternoon in a wetsuit.

Public surf lesson
The 2pm lesson at Tramore Surf School runs two hours with fifty minutes guaranteed in the water, eight to an instructor. Wetsuit and board are included. Book the day before in July and August.

Warm up at Splashworld
Twenty minutes up at Railway Square, and open 360 days a year, which makes it the fallback if the surf is blown out as well as the reward if it was not. Public swims must be pre-booked and swim caps are compulsory.

The amusements, if they are running
The fairground on the prom is seasonal and its opening window is not currently published by the operator, so check its Facebook page on the day. When it is running, the lit fairground over the wet sand after sunset is the picture people take home.

Dinner above the bay
One the Waterfront up on Gallwey's Hill has the view and opens Thursday to Sunday. If it is a Monday or the room is booked for a wedding, the Vic on Queen Street is doing food and there is usually music later.
