    Beach and surf lesson

Start at the National Surf Centre for a 2.5-hour beginner lesson with Atlantic Surf School, or, if you'd rather stay dry, walk the promenade and watch the swell; the beach is not safe for swimming but the surf is the whole point of being here.

    Lunch·1 hour

    Lunch on Shore Road

Warm up with lunch on Shore Road: Shell's for a Buddha bowl and coffee, Honestly Farm Kitchen for the Dexter steak sandwich, or Stoked if you want tapas.

    Knocknarea & Queen Maeve's Cairn

Start early from the Glen Road car park and climb Knocknarea to Queen Maeve's Cairn, the largest cairn in Ireland outside Brú na Bóinne. Allow 2.5-3 hours there and back, and wear proper boots for the loose middle section.

    Lunch back in the village

Back in Strandhill, refuel at The Strand Bar or The Venue, both open all day.

    Culleenamore and the tidal flats

Walk (or drive) out to Culleenamore Beach, a quieter stretch south of the village with a long oyster-farming history. Check tide times before going anywhere near the Coney Island crossing; never attempt it without local knowledge.
