Culleenamore Beach & the Coney Island crossing

← All things to do

About

A quieter beach south of Strandhill, reached by following the shore around Portcurry Point or cutting through the Shelly Valley. Historically the site of beach horse races and a once-famous oyster bed, its kitchen middens still visible at the Sandy Field. At low tide a sand strand connects to Coney Island and is still crossed on foot or by horse and cart by people who know the tides; it is genuinely dangerous to attempt without checking tide times locally first.

Tips

  • Never attempt the Coney Island crossing without checking tide times; the sands here have caught people out.
