Dalkey Itineraries
Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Dalkey, planned step by step.
Whether you have a few hours off the DART or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Dalkey. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.
Castle and Island Morning
The half-day that gets to the heart of Dalkey: the medieval castle in the village, then down to Coliemore for the boat to the island. Best from late spring to early autumn when the island boats are running. Easy from any DART stop on the southern line.
- 110:00·60-90 min
Tour Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre
Start in the village at Goat Castle on Castle Street. The living-history tour runs from the old churchyard up to the battlements with costumed actors, and the Writers' Gallery is worth the time afterwards. Allow an hour. Closed Tuesdays.

Coffee at Country Bake
A few doors along Castle Street, Country Bake does the coffee-and-a-pastry stop. Pick up something for the harbour while you are there.

Walk down to Coliemore Harbour
Ten minutes downhill on Coliemore Road to the little stone harbour that was once Dublin's medieval port. Use the free telescope to find the goats and the Martello tower across the sound.

Boat to Dalkey Island
In season, take the short crossing to the island for the Martello tower, St Begnet's church, the seals and the resident goats. WhatsApp the ferryman ahead to check the boat is running, and bring water and a jacket. Out of season, skip this and walk the coast instead.
View Dalkey Island - 514:00·60-90 min
Lunch in the village
Back up in the village, lunch at The Queens on Castle Street, or a first-come pub lunch at Finnegan's around the corner on Sorrento Road.

A Full Day in Dalkey
The works: the castle, the island, the climb up the hill, a Vico swim and dinner in the village. A long, satisfying day that uses everything Dalkey has, from medieval port to clifftop view. Built for a fine day from late spring to early autumn.

Down to Coliemore Harbour and across to Dalkey Island in season for the tower, the goats and the seals. Check the boat is running before you commit the morning to it.

Lunch on Castle Street
Lunch back in the village. The Queens does a solid gastropub plate; Ragazzi down towards Coliemore is the quick Italian option if you want pizza and pasta.

Up the Cat's Ladder to Dalkey Hill
Walk out to the Vico Road and climb the 238 steps of the Cat's Ladder onto Dalkey Hill, past the old quarry, for the full sweep of Dublin Bay. Come down a gentler path on the Killiney Hill Park side.
