Whitby's only traditional smokehouse, on Henrietta Street under the cliff below St Mary's Church, and the single most convincing argument that this is still a working town. The business was founded in 1872 by William Fortune and is still trading on the same premises more than 150 years on, through five generations of the family; the smoking and airing is still done the traditional way, currently by Derek and Barry Brown. There is no shop fit-out to speak of and no attempt at one. You go in, you buy kippers, you leave smelling of oak smoke for the rest of the day. Their own site lists Rick Stein, James Martin, Mary Berry and the Hairy Bikers among visitors, and kippers supplied to the Princess Royal.
