About

A family bakery and tearoom on Skinner Street on the West Side, and the town's default answer to what to take home if you are not taking kippers. Botham's bakes lemon buns, plum bread and Yorkshire brack alongside a full bakery range, and runs a tearoom above the Skinner Street shop. It is the sort of business that has been part of the town's routine long enough that residents shop there rather than only visitors, which is the test that matters. Closed Sundays at the Skinner Street shop.

Food

Fortune's Kippers

The town's only traditional smokehouse, on the same Henrietta Street premises since 1872, still smoking kippers over oak.

Known for: Oak-smoked Whitby kippers

Hours: Broadly 09:00 to 15:00 Monday to Saturday and shorter on Sunday. It is a small family smokehouse and can sell out, so go in the morning rather than the afternoon.

Food

The Whitby Catch

The quayside fishmonger on Pier Road, selling fresh fish and shellfish straight off the Whitby fleet.

Known for: Whitby crab and lobster, and the day's landed fish

Hours: Around 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and slightly shorter on Sunday. Stock depends on what has landed, so morning is better than afternoon.
