Accessibility
Town
Whitby is a hard town for anyone with limited mobility, and it is better to know that in advance. The East Side old town is cobbled and narrow, the 199 steps have no lift or alternative stair, and the Donkey Road slope beside them runs at close to a 50 per cent gradient. The abbey and St Mary's Church on the clifftop are reached by road and the East Cliff car park rather than by the steps, which is the route to use.
The West Side seafront and the harbour quaysides are largely flat and manageable. Contact individual venues directly for step-free entry, since many of the Church Street buildings are listed and cannot be altered.

Card and phone payment is accepted almost everywhere, but a handful of the smaller Church Street shops, some harbour stalls and the occasional market trader are cash-preferred, so carry a little. Specific machine locations were not itemised in this research pass; confirm on the ground.

999, then ask for the Coastguard. This is the correct number for anyone cut off by the tide, in difficulty in the water, or who has seen someone in trouble from the piers or the cliff path. Whitby has an RNLI lifeboat station on the harbour.
Police Station
North Yorkshire Police cover Whitby from the station on Spring Hill, YO21 1ED. Front-counter opening hours are limited and change, so confirm with North Yorkshire Police before relying on turning up in person. Call 101 for non-emergencies and 999 or 112 in an emergency.
Whitby has no A and E. The two nearest 24-hour accident and emergency departments are Scarborough Hospital, Woodlands Drive, Scarborough, YO12 6QL, roughly 20 miles south down the coast road, and The James Cook University Hospital, Marton Road, Middlesbrough, TS4 3BW, roughly 30 miles north west across the moors. James Cook is the region's major trauma centre. Both are well over half an hour away by car in good conditions and longer in summer traffic or bad weather on the A171, which is the single most important practical fact about medical care here. For anything that is not life-threatening, use the Whitby Urgent Treatment Centre at Whitby Community Hospital, Springhill, YO21 1DP, which is walk-in from 08:00 to 20:00 every day.

NHS Urgent Treatment Centre
Open 08:00 to 20:00, seven days a week including bank holidays, run by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. Walk-in, and you can also be booked in through NHS 111. It treats minor injury and illness: sprains, suspected fractures, minor head injuries, cuts, burns, infections, coughs and colds. X-ray is on site 09:00 to 16:30 on weekdays and 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays, but it does not X-ray chest, neck, back or hip. It cannot give telephone advice, does not do blood tests, post-operative wound care or dental problems, and is NOT an A and E. Verified against the trust's own service page on 2026-08-17.
Whitby Community Hospital
Hosts the Urgent Treatment Centre plus inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic services. It has no accident and emergency department and does not receive blue-light emergencies.
The hospital phone number given is the Scarborough Hospital switchboard. For urgent but not life-threatening advice, NHS 111 is free and answers 24 hours. NHS prescriptions in England carry a per-item charge, unlike Scotland and Wales.
Luggage Storage
No staffed left-luggage service was independently confirmed in Whitby during this research pass. Whitby station is unstaffed for luggage purposes. Ask your accommodation to hold bags on a check-out day, which most will.

The two Langborne Road marina car parks (YO22 4AG and YO22 4EW) are the main town-centre parking, a short walk from the swing bridge and the station. Both confirmed operational 2026-08-17 against North Yorkshire Council's own car-park directory. They fill by mid-morning on a summer weekend and during Goth Weekend. The East Cliff car park by the abbey is the alternative if you want to start at the top and walk down the 199 steps rather than up them.

Full-size supermarket provision is on the West Side and the town edge rather than in the old town. Church Street on the East Side is independent shops, galleries and jet workshops, with a couple of small convenience shops only.

Most cafes and pubs offer customer WiFi. Mobile coverage in the town itself is workable but drops off quickly once you are on the Cleveland Way or out on the moors, which matters if you are relying on a phone for a walking route or a tide time.
SIM Cards
There is no dedicated phone shop provision worth planning around in Whitby itself. Visitors from outside the UK should sort a prepaid SIM or eSIM before arriving or in Scarborough, Middlesbrough or York. UK and EU roaming arrangements vary by provider since Brexit, so check yours rather than assuming.
