About
Oxford's most famous hidden pub, reached down narrow alleys off Holywell Street and New College Lane, hard under the old city wall, with a history its operator dates to 1381. Low beams inside, a warren of walled yards outside with braziers in winter, and a food menu of pub classics served daily. The roll-call of drinkers is half the fun of the signage: C.S. Lewis, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor among them. It gets rammed, and the pub does not take bookings from May to the end of September, so treat a summer visit as a walk-in and go at an off-peak hour.

East Oxford's benchmark gastropub: daily changing seasonal menu, proper front bar, closed Mondays. Worth the walk from the centre.

One of Oxford's oldest pubs, tiny and low-beamed, walls lined with thousands of framed tie clippings. Turn up and squeeze in.
The Perch
A thatched inn at Binsey across Port Meadow, with the best pub garden near the city. Food daily noon to 9pm; the walk earns the pint.
