Oxford Itineraries

Half a day or a full weekend. Here are the best ways to spend your time in Oxford, planned step by step.

Whether you have a few hours or a full weekend to explore, these itineraries give you a local’s route through Oxford. Each one links directly to the restaurants and activities along the way.

Oxford in Half a Day

half-dayYear-round

The essential centre on foot for anyone in the city for a morning or an afternoon: Radcliffe Square and the Divinity School, the Covered Market for lunch, and Christ Church or the tower view to finish. Everything is within a fifteen-minute walk of everything else, and most of it costs little or nothing. Book Christ Church ahead; its tickets are released each Friday and walk-up entry is not guaranteed.

Radcliffe Square and the Divinity School

Start in Radcliffe Square before the crowds build, then take the short self-guided Divinity School visit inside the Bodleian quadrangle. If a guided library tour appeals, book it for later in the morning when you buy the Divinity School ticket.

    Climb the University Church tower

127 medieval steps to the best close-up view of the square you just stood in. Tickets on site; skip if steep stairs are a problem and browse Blackwell's on Broad Street instead.

Pick a food counter, or build a picnic from the cheesemonger and finish with a warm cookie from the original Ben's Cookies stall.

    Christ Church and the meadow

The pre-booked slot at Christ Church for the Great Hall and cathedral, then out through the meadow gate for the free riverside circuit if time allows.

A Full Day in Oxford

full-dayYear-round

The half-day core plus the things that make Oxford more than its postcard: an hour on the Cherwell in a punt, one of the free museums, and dinner in a pub that predates the university's printing press. Swap the punt for the Museum of Natural History and Pitt Rivers in wet weather; the day works in any season because so much of it has a roof.

Radcliffe Square, the Divinity School and Broad Street

The university quarter first: the square, the Divinity School's fan vault, then Blackwell's Norrington Room across Broad Street.

View Bodleian Library & Radcliffe Square

    Christ Church

The pre-booked visit: Tom Quad, the Great Hall and the cathedral, then a look at the meadow's longhorn cattle.

    Lunch at Quod

The all-day brasserie in the Old Bank on the High Street; the set lunch is the value play, the garden terrace the fair-weather one.

    Punt from Magdalen Bridge

An hour on the Cherwell under Magdalen Tower, past the Botanic Garden. In wet weather substitute the Museum of Natural History and the Pitt Rivers, both free.

    The Ashmolean

Free entry until 5pm; even 45 minutes covers a floor properly. The Randolph's Morse Bar over the road is the natural pause afterwards.

    Dinner at the Turf Tavern

Finish down the alley at the Turf, dated to 1381, with braziers in the yards in winter. No summer bookings, so arrive early or expect to hover; the Bear on Alfred Street is the equally old fallback.
