Discover Mumbles
Swansea's seaside end: a castle over the village, a Victorian pier, ice cream on the prom and a coast path round the headland
A village with two names at the end of the bay
Oystermouth is the old village, Ystumllwynarth in Welsh, with a twelfth-century parish church, All Saints', and a Norman castle that the de Braose lords of Gower rebuilt in stone and made their main home in the thirteenth century. Mumbles is the headland beyond it. Over the last two centuries the two ran together along Mumbles Road, and the name of the headland won: the electoral ward was even renamed Mumbles in 2022. The district is part of the City and County of Swansea, and Swansea Council runs the castle, the beaches and the car parks.
The village grew on oysters, limestone and, from 1807, the railway round the bay, which the Dylan Thomas trail calls the first passenger railway in the world and which closed in 1960. Its line is now the flat path along the prom. What is left is a small seaside place that Swansea treats as its day out: a Saturday on Newton Road, a cone from Joe's, a pint at the Pilot, and a walk to the pier or round the headland to Langland. It is the gateway to Gower, which Swansea Council now calls the Gower National Landscape, and the coast path west from Langland is where Gower proper begins.

Mumbles Right Now
The village and the prom sit in the lee of the headland and are usually calmer than the beaches round the corner at Bracelet Bay and Langland, which catch the full south-westerly. Showers come in off the sea and pass quickly; keep an indoor plan, such as the pier amusements, a long lunch at the Oyster House or the Pilot, and always check the tide before going near the lighthouse islands.
