About
One of the largest art collections in England outside London, in a neo-Classical building on William Brown Street's museum quarter. The collection runs from Italian and Netherlandish paintings of 1300-1550 through Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas to a major Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite collection, and on to Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Gilbert & George in the 20th-century rooms. The gallery hosts the John Moores Painting Prize, the UK's biggest painting prize, on a biennial cycle since 1957. Free entry, as with all National Museums Liverpool sites.
