A Grade I listed Victorian gin palace on Hope Street, commissioned by the Robert Cain brewery and built 1898-1900 in an exuberant Art Nouveau and Free Style mix, widely called one of the most ornate pubs in England. The wrought-iron entrance gates are among the finest Art Nouveau metalwork in the country, and the interior, with mosaic bar counters, stained glass and elaborate plasterwork, was fitted out by Charles John Allen and craftsmen from the local School of Architecture and Applied Arts. It takes its name from its position opposite the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and has drawn concertgoers and musicians since it opened. Classic pub food, real ales and a serious gin list; no bookings, walk in.
