Reputedly Edinburgh's oldest surviving pub site, with an inn said to have stood here since 1360, tucked into Duddingston village on the far side of Arthur's Seat. The Victorian skittle alley out the back, built around 1880 and reputedly the last in Scotland, is still bookable, and the Trotters Club has met to play here since 1882; Queen Elizabeth II famously dropped in unannounced after the Musselburgh races in 2016. It is the natural end point of a walk over the hill or around Duddingston Loch: gastropub cooking, a courtyard, and a village that does not feel like it can possibly still be inside the city.
