Chester in Half a Day
The essential circuit for anyone off a morning train or a short stop between other plans: a stretch of the city walls to get your bearings, the Cathedral, a proper look at the Rows on Eastgate and Watergate, and lunch under cover in case the Cheshire weather has other ideas. Everything is inside or just outside the walls, all on foot, and the station is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the start point.
- 110:00·45 minutes
A stretch of the City Walls from Eastgate
Start at the Eastgate Clock and walk the wall south past Newgate and the Roman Amphitheatre, then down toward the Groves; you do not need the full circuit to get the shape of the city.
View Chester City Walls Walk - 211:00·45 minutes
Chester Cathedral
Drop down into the Cathedral quarter for the cloisters and chapter house; check the day's service times before you go in.
View Chester Cathedral - 312:00·1 hour
The Rows on Eastgate and Watergate
Work the galleries at first-floor level on both streets, crossing down to street level and back up wherever a staircase presents itself; look for the stone undercrofts beneath some of the shopfronts.
View The Rows - 413:00·1 hour
Lunch beneath the Rows
Stile Napoletano's Neapolitan pizza or Shrub's plant-based small plates both sit directly on the Rows, so lunch and sightseeing overlap without a detour.

A Full Day in Chester: Walls, Rows and the Roodee
The complete circuit for a day with room to breathe: the whole wall walk, the Roman Amphitheatre and Grosvenor Museum for context, a proper pass through the Rows, a river cruise from the Groves, a look at the Roodee, and dinner at one of Chester's better independents to finish. Nothing here needs a car; the whole day works on foot with one short boat trip.

The full City Walls circuit
Start at Eastgate and walk the whole loop, just under two miles: Newgate, the Amphitheatre, the Groves side, Bridgegate, the racecourse stretch, the Water Tower, Northgate and King Charles Tower, back to Eastgate.
View Chester City Walls Walk - 210:45·1.5 hours
Roman Amphitheatre and Grosvenor Museum
See the excavated amphitheatre floor from ground level, then the Grosvenor Museum a few minutes away for the Roman tombstones and the fuller Deva Victrix story.
View Chester Roman Amphitheatre - 312:30·1 hour
Lunch on Northgate Street
Covino's small plates and wine list make a good midday stop before the afternoon's walking resumes.
View Covino - 414:00·1 hour
The Rows, Watergate to Bridge Street
A slower pass through the western and southern Rows, in and out of the covered sections, ending near the Bridgegate stretch of the wall.
View The Rows - 515:15·30 minutes
River cruise from the Groves
A half-hour on the Dee with ChesterBoat, upstream past Grosvenor Park and back, a good way to rest your legs after the walls and the Rows.
View ChesterBoat Half-Hour City Cruise - 616:00·30 minutes
The Roodee from the walls
Walk the western stretch of the wall above Watergate for a free view over Chester Racecourse, the world's oldest still racing, whether or not there is a meeting on.
View Chester Racecourse (The Roodee) - 719:00·2 hours
Dinner in Hoole
Finish the day out at Sticky Walnut in Hoole, a short bus or taxi ride from the centre and worth the detour for the kitchen alone.
