A medieval bridge over the Wye, a Monday cattle sale, and three shops with an opinion on the pudding
A market town on the Wye, with a pudding to argue about
Bakewell is a sandstone market town on the River Wye, inside the Peak District National Park, built around the Square and the bridge. The Rutland Arms on the Square was built in 1804 for the Duke of Rutland, the bridge over the Wye has five pointed arches dated to about 1300 in its listing, and the parish church on the hill above has two Anglo-Saxon crosses in its churchyard.
Monday is still market day: stalls in the town centre and a livestock market at the Agricultural Business Centre across the river, which the Princess Royal opened in 1999. And there is the pudding, sold in three shops that do not agree on its history.

Bakewell Right Now
Bakewell sits in a sheltered valley, but the Peak District around it is wetter and cooler than the lowlands, and it can change quickly on the hills. Bring a waterproof, and have an indoor plan for a wet day: the Old House Museum in season, the parish church, the pudding shop restaurants or the Thornbridge taproom.
