The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop
The Square, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1BT
About
The green-fronted shop on the Square, with a bakery counter and gift shop on the ground floor and a beamed restaurant up the stairs. Its own history page tells the White Horse story: a cook at the inn spread the egg mixture over a layer of jam instead of stirring it into the pastry, and around 1860 Mrs Wilson, wife of the town's tallow chandler, acquired the recipe and started making puddings to sell. The shop says its puddings are still made by hand to that recipe and serves them hot with custard or cream; it also says the restaurant is only reached by a staircase and that it does not serve gluten-free puddings or tarts in the restaurant, though the shop downstairs sells gluten-free tarts. Restaurant tables are booked by phone, and walk-ins are welcome. Two other Bakewell shops make their own claims about the pudding; we list all three.
