Best Time to Visit

Spring

March - May

The Old House Museum's 2026 season was opened on 25 March and runs to 5 November; 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026. The church moves to its spring and summer hours, 9am to 5pm.

Spring is when the Old House Museum reopens: its 2026 season ran from 25 March, daily from 11am to 4pm, in a house built as a tithe house in 1534. The parish church opens 9am to 5pm in spring and summer. The Monsal Trail tunnels are lit on a light sensor, so the longer evenings matter if you plan to walk or ride back late. Monday stays market day all year, stalls in town and cattle and sheep at the ABC.

Summer

June - August

The busiest months. The Bakewell Country Festival, a one-day show on the Showground, was held on Sunday 12 July 2026; 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026.

Summer is when the trail is full of hired bikes from Hassop Station and the riverbank by the bridge fills with people eating something from a paper bag. The Woodyard says its beer garden is the only one in Bakewell that looks over the Wye. The Agricultural and Horticultural Society's one-day Bakewell Country Festival takes the Showground in July; it ran on Sunday 12 July in 2026, and the society had not announced 2027 when we checked. The Tart Shop launched its whole-tart eating challenge on National Bakewell Tart Day, 24 June 2026.

Autumn

September - November

The Old House Museum's 2026 season: to 5 November. Bagshaws adds Friday store-sheep sales in the autumn season. The Christmas Sparkle at the ABC, 2026: Sunday 29 November.

Autumn is the busiest time at the livestock market: Bagshaws adds Friday sales of store sheep to its usual Monday and Thursday sales through the autumn season. The Old House Museum's last 2026 opening day before winter: 5 November. The Agricultural and Horticultural Society's 2026 Christmas Sparkle at the ABC: Sunday 29 November, 10am to 4pm. Haddon Hall, two miles south of the town, closed from 8 to 25 October 2026, opened again for half-term week and then closes until its Christmas market.

Winter

December - February

The church moves to 9am to 4pm. The Monsal Trail tunnel lights switch off around 4.30pm on winter afternoons, so carry a light.

Winter is short days and the pubs. The parish church keeps 9am to 4pm in autumn and winter. On the Monsal Trail the tunnel lights run on a daylight sensor and switch off around 4.30pm in winter, according to the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, so carry a torch if you are out late. The Thornbridge taproom on Buxton Road is open every day, and its tour and tasting runs year round. The cattle and sheep sales carry on every week.
