About
The older of the two harbour forts, a ruined star fort over at Castlepark across the water from the town, built in the early 17th century and named for James I. It predates Charles Fort and stands unstaffed today as a free national monument, with a short loop walk around the earthworks and the remains of the blockhouse down at the water. From up on the ramparts you look straight back across the harbour to Kinsale and Charles Fort on the far shore. It is reached on foot or by road around to Castlepark.
