SpringMarch - May
Charles Fort and the Old Head museum reopen for the main season. The harbour cruises and angling boats start running on settled weekends. The Rugby 7s fills the town on the early-May bank holiday.
Spring is the easiest time to walk Kinsale. Charles Fort runs its full daily hours from mid-March, the Lusitania Museum out at the Old Head is open again, and the Scilly Walk between the town and Summercove is at its best before the summer crowds, with the harbour busy with the first yachts going back in the water. The harbour cruises and the angling boats start running on the settled weekends. The one weekend to plan around, or for, is the Heineken Kinsale Rugby 7s on the early-May bank holiday, when the biggest sevens tournament in Ireland takes over the town and every bed is booked months out. Otherwise the restaurants are quieter than they will be in July, which is the time to get a table at Bastion or Fishy Fishy without planning a week ahead.
SummerJune - August
Peak season. The Arts Weekend is mid-July, the Regatta runs from late July into early August. Boat trips, sailing and the forts are all running; book restaurants and beds well ahead.
Summer is when the harbour is fullest and the town is busiest. Kinsale Arts Weekend takes over the streets in the middle of July, and the Regatta, the oldest in Ireland, runs from late July into the August bank holiday with yacht and dinghy racing, the Sandycove Island swim and a five-mile road race. The harbour cruises run most days the weather holds, the paddleboard and kayak tours go out from the Dock Beach, and the Scilly Walk and Charles Fort are busy from mid-morning. Book restaurants well ahead, especially at weekends; the Good Food Circle places fill, and Fishy Fishy and the Bulman at Summercove do not take bookings for lunch, so go early. The long evenings are made for a drink on the waterfront after the day boats have come in.
AutumnSeptember - November
The Gourmet Festival in October is the flagship weekend of the year. The forts and the museum stay open into late autumn; quieter walking and clearer light.
Autumn is the food season. The Kinsale Gourmet Festival in October is the flagship weekend of the year, run by the Good Food Circle, when the restaurants put on tasting menus and the Mad Hatter's Taste of Kinsale walks the town between courses. Charles Fort and the Old Head museum stay open into late October, the harbour quietens as the visiting yachts come out of the water, and the Scilly Walk is at its best in the low autumn light. This is the time to do a guided food tour without the summer queues, and to get the table you could not get in July. Book a bed for the Gourmet Festival weekend itself well ahead; the rest of the season is the easiest time to have the town to yourself.
WinterDecember - February
The forts keep shorter winter hours and the boat trips stop, but the town keeps trading. Restaurant Week and the Christmas trade carry the season; the harbour is dramatic in a southwesterly.
Winter strips Kinsale back to the town that lives here. The harbour cruises and the angling boats stop, the Old Head museum runs reduced days, and Charles Fort keeps shorter winter hours, but the restaurants and pubs keep trading and the town leans into its food reputation with Restaurant Week and the Christmas trade. The Scilly Walk out to Summercove is a bracing hour in any weather, and the harbour is at its most dramatic with a southwesterly running up the Bandon estuary. A table at Fishy Fishy or the Bulman that you would queue for in July is yours for the asking, and the wine bars are at their best with the fires going. Check opening days before you travel; several places close midweek out of season.
