About

Poppies has been trading on the Square since 1982, which in a village this size makes it less a cafe than a fixture. It occupies the corner unit that older residents still remember as Buckley's shop, and before that as the post office, and it is the place the village goes for a fry, a bowl of soup, a slice of something from the counter, or a coffee taken outside on the bench while the world parks badly around the clock tower. The cooking is old-fashioned country-kitchen food done properly: quiches, savoury tarts, jacket potatoes, brown bread, and a cake counter that is the actual reason a lot of people stop. It opens early, which matters here, because on a summer morning the difference between a table at eight and a queue at eleven is the difference between two versions of Enniskerry.
