Avoca occupies the ground floor of Powerscourt House, the shell of which was rebuilt after the fire of 1974, and its Terrace Cafe is where most people who visit the gardens actually eat. It is a big room, with tall windows and French doors giving onto the lawns with the Great Sugar Loaf on the horizon, and the food is Avoca's usual self-service counter of salads, soups, hot dishes, and the scones that have their own following. The useful thing to know, and it catches people out both ways, is that you do not need a gardens ticket to get into Avoca or the shops: the house courtyard is free to enter, so the cafe is a legitimate stop even if you are not paying to walk the terraces.
