About

A long, low sand spit that curls out into Dungarvan Bay from the Abbeyside side, marking the bay's western edge and running to around three kilometres. It is a popular spot for swimming, walking and birdwatching, with a wide sandy seaward beach and a sheltered, rockier bay side full of wading birds. At low tide the water pulls back to reveal a vast expanse of sand and the bay's oyster beds.

Highlights

  • Wide sandy beach on the seaward side
  • Oyster beds visible at low tide
  • Wading birds and seals in the harbour

Tips

  • Time your walk to a falling tide for the most ground to cover
  • Exposed and tide-dependent; check tide times before setting out
  • Bring binoculars for the birdlife
