Dungarvan Right Now
Dungarvan sits on an exposed south-coast bay, so pack layers and a light rain jacket whatever the season. The Greenway and the Cunnigar both catch the wind off the water, and conditions on the bay can change quickly, so check the forecast before any beach or boat plan.

A harbour town with a railway, a castle, and a serious appetite
Dungarvan grew up around an Anglo-Norman castle that King John's men put at the mouth of the River Colligan in the 1180s, guarding the spot where the river spills into the bay. It has been the county town of the Déise, the old name for Waterford and its people, for centuries, and the big Georgian sweep of Grattan Square dates from the early 1800s, when the town was laid out as a planned market centre.
The railway that once linked it to Waterford city closed decades ago, but in 2017 it reopened as the Waterford Greenway and changed the place. Add a food scene that has punched far above the town's weight since Paul and Máire Flynn opened the Tannery in 1997, and the Irish-speaking peninsula of An Rinn just across the bay, and you have a town that rewards a slow couple of days.
