County Arms Hotel
Railway Road, Birr, Co. Offaly, R42 Y568
About
Birr's four-star hotel, in a Georgian house on Railway Road built in 1809 as a private home called Moorpark House and opened to travellers in 1962. It has stayed in the same hospitality use since. Rooms run from classic doubles to Georgian suites and the self-contained Nest and Aviary; there is a leisure club with a pool, wellness suites, and three eating and drinking rooms: Bar 62, Hackett's Eatery on the first floor and the Shaker Room for cocktails. The walled garden supplies part of the kitchen and the terrace looks over it. It is about a twenty-minute walk or a four-minute drive from the gates of Birr Castle Demesne, so it is a car-optional base rather than a castle-gate one. Book direct on the hotel's own site.
