Getting to Birr
How to reach Birr by train, bus, taxi, car, or bicycle.
Train (nearest station Tullamore)
Birr has no railway station. The town had one once, and the Birr FAN Trail commemorates a stationmaster's daughter who joined Sinn Fein in 1907, but the line is long gone and Birr does not appear in Iarnrod Eireann's station list at all. The nearest useful station is Tullamore, about 37km north by road, on the Dublin Heuston to Galway and Westport line. Portlaoise, about 62km southeast, is on the Dublin Heuston to Cork main line and has the most frequent service of the three. Roscrea is the physically closest station at about 19km, but it sits on the lightly served Ballybrophy to Limerick branch: a live check of the Irish Rail departures board for Roscrea at 10:00 on 15 September 2026 returned no trains in the lookahead window, while Tullamore, Portlaoise and Thurles all returned live services at the same moment. Whichever station you use, the last leg into Birr is a bus or a taxi, and the published bus stop lists name the towns rather than the station forecourts, so allow time to walk or arrange a pickup.

Bus and coach
Buses are how Birr actually connects to the rest of the country. Kearns Transport is a Birr company and runs the services most visitors want: daily coaches to Dublin, plus Maynooth, Galway and the local Birr to Tullamore route. Their Dublin stops include Cathal Brugha Street and the Ha'Penny Bridge. The operator posted a notice effective Sunday 6 September 2026 that the 19:00 service from Birr no longer operates and that the latest Sunday departure from Birr to Dublin is 17:25, so check the current timetable rather than an old one. TFI Local Link Laois Offaly covers the rural network: route 823 Birr to Portlaoise daily via Crinkill, Kinnitty, Clonaslee and Mountmellick, route 850 Athlone to Roscrea daily through Clonmacnoise, Shannonbridge, Banagher, Birr, Crinkill, Shinrone, Roscrea, Templemore and Thurles, and route OY2 Cloghan to Thurles on weekdays. Those Local Link routes are the cheapest way to reach Clonmacnoise and the Slieve Bloom foothills without a car.

Taxis
Taxis operate in Birr but there is no rank you can rely on standing at, and the town is small enough that most visitors do not need one within it. Where a taxi matters is the last leg from a railway station: Tullamore is about 37km, Portlaoise about 62km, and those are pre-book jobs rather than something you flag down on arrival. Hotels will arrange one. Ask your accommodation for a current local number rather than relying on an app, since app coverage in south Offaly is thin.

Driving
Birr sits on the N62, with the N52 running through it and the N63 heading southwest to Roscrea, about 19km away. Road distances from Birr, measured on the public OSRM routing engine: Dublin city centre about 140km and around an hour and three quarters, Galway about 95km and an hour and twenty, Clonmacnoise about 35km and a half hour, Thurles about 52km. A number of streets in the town centre, Main Street included, are one way, and the town is small enough to walk end to end in ten to fifteen minutes, so park once and leave the car. Critically for the main attraction: there is no car parking inside Birr Castle Demesne. Use the Marian Hall car park on Cornmarket Street directly opposite the pedestrian entrance, which is pay and display and, per the estate's own page, coin only. There is a free car park just off Wilmer Road behind the town playground, and free on-street parking on Oxmantown Mall if you do not block a resident's driveway.

Cycling
The country around Birr is flat to gently rolling and the lanes are quiet, which makes it decent cycling once you are off the N62. Dooly's Hotel offers secure bicycle storage. One firm restriction to plan around: bikes and scooters are not permitted inside Birr Castle Demesne, so the 120 acres of parkland is a walking site, not a cycling one. For serious off-road riding the Slieve Bloom mountain bike trail network starts from Kinnitty village, about 13km east, and it is a purpose-built network rather than a few forest tracks.
