Weather
Birr sits in the middle of the country in south Co. Offaly, on the flat limestone plain where the Camcor comes down off the Slieve Bloom Mountains to meet the Little Brosna. It is about as far from the sea as anywhere in Ireland gets, which shows in the numbers: a wider swing between summer and winter than the coast, colder clear nights, and morning fog on the river flats in autumn. The Camcor is a spate river and rises fast after heavy rain in the mountains, so a dry morning in town is no guarantee the falls in the demesne will be quiet. Rain is spread through the year rather than concentrated, and the walled demesne is noticeably more sheltered than the open malls.

Spring
March - May
The demesne gardens do their serious work now. Snowdrops under the hornbeam cloister first, then crocus, then the magnolia collection, then rhododendron and the lilac avenue. Castle interior tours have not started yet.
Spring is when the gardens at Birr Castle Demesne earn the admission on their own. The snowdrops planted around the hornbeam cloister by Anne, Countess of Rosse, come first, then crocus, then the magnolias, which the estate rates as one of the finest collections in Ireland and which include a Magnolia delavayi planted on the castle terraces around 1912. The wisteria on the upper terrace usually opens from mid-May. The Flora Trail map, free with general admission, runs May to June and picks out twenty native trees and plants. Note what is not available yet: the guided tours of the castle interior run from mid-May, so a March or April visit sees the demesne, the gardens, the Great Telescope and the seven galleries of the Historic Science Centre, and no rooms. Birr Festival of Music takes the May bank holiday weekend across the town's historic venues. Hours and admission change with the season, so check birrcastle.com before you set out.
Summer
June - August
The only window for the castle interior. Guided tours ran mid-May to early September in 2026, Monday to Saturday, fifteen people per tour, pre-booking essential. Vintage Week fills nine days from 31 July to 8 August.
Summer is the one part of the year you can get inside the castle. In 2026 the Guided Castle Tour ran from 15 May to 5 September, Monday to Saturday at 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00, sixty minutes, fifteen people per tour, and it was priced at 22 euro per person including general admission. Pre-booking is essential and it is not suitable for under-12s or wheelchair users, because the castle is a listed building full of stairs. The rest of summer belongs to the parkland: ten kilometres of tracks, the lake walk past the heronry, the treehouse and playground, and a courtyard cafe open daily from 10.00 in season. Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival, running since 1968, took nine days from 31 July to 8 August in 2026 and fills the malls with street theatre, parades and pub events. Late August is also when the Croneen trout run the Camcor, and the estate says you can sometimes watch them jump at the waterfall near the suspension bridge.
Autumn
September - November
Festival season indoors. OFFline Film Festival in early October, Hullabaloo over the Halloween mid-term, and the demesne turns. The castle interior tours have finished for the year.
Autumn is Birr's busiest stretch for the arts, and almost all of it happens indoors within a few hundred metres of Emmet Square. OFFline Film Festival, based at Birr Theatre and Arts Centre on Oxmantown Mall, ran its 17th edition from 7 to 11 October 2026 with screenings, masterclasses and a three-day filmmaking challenge. Hullabaloo, Offaly's children's arts festival, took the Halloween mid-term from 28 to 31 October 2026, and the demesne ran its own Witch's Magic Trail for younger children from 24 to 31 October. Outdoors, the parkland is at its best: the Red Tree Trail covers 65 specimen trees over about five kilometres, and the Magnolia delavayi on the castle terraces flowers in September and October, which is unusual enough that the estate flags it. Castle interior tours have finished by now, so plan around the demesne, the science centre and the theatre.
Winter
December - February
Short days, and the seven galleries of the science centre are the indoor answer. The demesne runs a ticketed Christmas train into the castle from late November.
Winter in Birr is short daylight and a walkable town, which suits it. Ireland's Historic Science Centre carries a wet afternoon on its own: seven galleries covering the Parsons family's telescopes, early photography and engineering, including a hologram of Mary Rosse and the darkroom the estate describes as the oldest intact example in the world. From late November the demesne runs the Birr Castle Christmas Express, a ticketed train through the winter grounds and into the castle to meet Santa and Mrs Claus, which in 2026 ran from 28 November to 22 December and is the one other time of year the public gets inside the building. Pre-booking is essential and it is not wheelchair accessible. Birr Theatre programmes film and touring drama through the dark months. Bare limes on Oxmantown Mall show the Georgian frontages better than full summer foliage does, and the FAN Trail's blue plaques are readable in any weather.
