Jorvik Viking Centre

← All things to do

About

Built on the exact site of the Coppergate dig, where excavations between 1976 and 1981 uncovered the streets, houses and workshops of Viking-age Jorvik preserved in wet ground. The ride carries you through a reconstruction of the city as it stood around 960, complete with recorded Norse speech and famously honest smells, then galleries show the real finds, from combs and coins to the celebrated Coppergate helmet. It runs on timed entry slots and sells out in school holidays, so pre-book; the same trust runs the February Viking Festival across the city.
